Fixing the date
There is no fixed date. The Kaliyattam is held on the Saturday and Sunday after Thulam 21.
No specific date has been fixed for the Theyyam at Meenakkottil. By custom, the Kaliyattam may be held once Thulam 21 has passed. That is the day the Kaliyattam is held at Alanthatta Madavathukkal, where Sree Madayil Chamundi first gave darshan to Vannadil Pothuval.
So that members of the tharavadu can take an active part, the Kaliyattam has for many years been held on the Saturday and Sunday that follow Thulam 21. Records show that in earlier times it was even held around Vrischika Sankramam.
However, once the purification rites begin for the Payyanur Perumal festival, a fowl offering (Kozhiyaravu) within the Urbali circuit is considered unsuitable. For this reason the Kaliyattam is not held after the purification begins following the re-consecration (Punahpratishtha) ceremonies.

Giving the Adayalam
After the Puthari Adiyantharam, the Peruvannan and the Kalashakkaran are formally told the date of the Theyyam.
Every year, after the Puthari Adiyantharam held on Thulam 10, the concerned members fix the date of the Theyyam and also the date for giving the Adayalam (the formal sign of invitation).
For this, the Peruvannan and the Kalashakkaran, the hereditary holders of the right to perform the Theyyam, are invited to Meenakkottil on the appointed day. In the Thirumuttam (sacred courtyard) they are offered betel leaf, areca nut and dakshina.
Once the Peruvannan has bowed before the Bhagavathi in the courtyard and is ready to receive the Adayalam from the tharavadu Karanavar (senior elder), the Kalashakkaran is first given betel leaf, areca nut and dakshina and told the date fixed for the Theyyam. If the Kalashakkaran is absent, this is laid at the Kalashathara. Then the Peruvannan is told the date and given the Adayalam.

Opening the shrine
One member of the tharavadu keeps the vow. The shrine opens with a Kalasham of tender coconut water.
One member of the tharavadu must keep the vow (Nottirikkuka) for the Kaliyattam. On the day the Kaliyattam begins, this person opens the shrine and performs a Kalasham with tender coconut water. The standing lamps of the Pallikkiyara (inner shrine) are then brought out, washed and cleaned, lit, and the Malar Nivedyam (offering of puffed rice) is made.
Next, the puja vessels, idols and sacred weapons (Thiruvayudham) are brought out, washed and cleaned. The Devi pedestals are cleaned in the proper manner and silk is tied behind each pedestal. The idols are adorned with the ornaments due to them, and the idols and weapons are returned to their places.
The next task is to prepare the sandalwood and red sandalwood that will be placed on the Kodiyila (banana leaf) given to the Peruvannans who come to recite the Thottam. It is the duty of the tharavadu members to check and set aside the Nivedyam items brought by the hereditary families who perform the Theyyam.
Until the shrine is closed after the Theyyam, everything in the Pallikkiyara is the responsibility of the person keeping the vow. Long ago, Valiya Edacheri Ambu Pothuval, who kept the vow, was seen to carry out all the duties of the Arakkal with great diligence. Although times have changed and perfect precision is no longer always possible, it may be said that the rites are still carried out today with a fair degree of care.

Vannarivichu Kottal
After the evening lamp, a drum call announces the Peruvannans and the start of the Theyyam. Puja follows in the Pallikkiyara, then the Thottam begins.
After the evening lamp is lit, the “Vannarivichu Kottal” is performed. This drum call announces that the Peruvannans appointed to perform the Theyyam have arrived and that it is time for the Theyyam to begin. A mat is then spread on the platform outside the Pallikkiyara, with a Niranazhi (measure of rice) and a standing lamp, and Sreekantan Daivam’s Kaduthila, shield and other weapons are placed there.
For the puja to the deities in the Pallikkiyara, the following are first set out as Muthirchcha (the offering arrangement). Then the bell is rung and the puja is performed.
5 Kodiyila (banana-leaf servings) of dry rice
5 Kodiyila of Malar (puffed rice)
3 reddened tender coconuts
2 ordinary tender coconuts
Betel leaf and areca nut on all 5 Kodiyila
After the puja it is time for the Thottam. When the Koladharis (performers) of Kanakkara Bhagavathi and Madayil Chamundi arrive in the Thirumuttam to recite their Thottam, the person keeping the vow gives each of them a lit Kodiyila. The Peruvannan who has come in silk, ready to perform Vellattam, the Thottam form of Sreekantan Daivam, is given a lit Kodiyila as well.
Once the Peruvannans who came to recite the Thottam have tied the Thalappali (head cloth) and put on sandalwood and red sandalwood, the Karanavar of the tharavadu gives everyone the Kainettam (betel leaf and areca nut). The one ready to perform Vellattam is then given Sreekantan Daivam’s Kaduthila. After bowing to the Daivam, he returns the Kaduthila and goes to the Aniyara (green room) to have the Mukhathezhuthu (face painting) for Vellattam done.

Vellattam
Vellattam is the Thottam form of Sreekantan Daivam. Each Thottam ends with Gurusi offering and a tender coconut Kalasham.
After the Thottam comes the Purappadu (entry) of Vellattam. Having bowed to the Payyanur Perumal, danced and blessed the devotees, the Theyyam says that it will be seen again in its true form, and leaves the arena.
After Vellattam, the Muthirchcha laid out in the Pallikkiyara is folded away and purified, and preparations are made for pouring the Appam. After the Appam is made, when the Thottam of Kanakkara Bhagavathi is to be recited, the one who will perform Sreekantan Daivam comes as well, and the rites that were done earlier when he came for Vellattam are repeated.
In the same way, at the end of all three Thottams, including those of Madayil Chamundi and Vishnumoorthy, the performers themselves make the Gurusi offering (Gurusitharppanam) and perform a Kalasham with tender coconut water.

Sreekantan Daivam
After the Thottams, Sreekantan Daivam, revered as the family elder, makes his Purappadu. The Padayottam and the giving of Kanakappodi follow.
After the Thottams, it is time for the Purappadu of Sreekantan Daivam, worshipped as our own Karanavar (family elder). Before he begins, as described earlier, 5 Kodiyila each of rice and Malar and 5 Kodiyila of Appam are set out as Nivedyam. Appam is also tied up separately in one Kodiyila. This is the Thanneeramruthu for the Daivam.
After the Mukhathezhuthu, Sreekantan Daivam comes in ornaments and finery by the light of the Olachuttu (palm-leaf torches), without the Mudi, and sits facing the Kalashathara, where the Mudi is placed. Then the Karanavar of the tharavadu walks backwards with chain-lamp (Changalavatta) and rice on the Vellattu Thalika, circling the Kalashathara three times, while the Daivam circles facing the Karanavar.
After the circumambulation, he goes straight east, bows to the Perumal, and only then are the other rites performed. After the changing of weapons and other Kalashams comes the Padayottam (Kallyampalli) of Sreekantan Daivam, held at a specially prepared spot at the north-east corner of the Padippura (gatehouse). The Karanavar accompanies him with the Thalika and Changalavatta, and the one keeping the vow in the Ara follows with water in a Kindi (vessel).
After the Padayottam and the fowl offering there, the hands and feet are washed for purity. He returns to the shrine, sits on the pedestal, partakes of the Thanneeramruthu, and then gives Kanakappodi to the devotees. When the Daivam is over, the Appams laid out as Muthirchcha are cleared away.

Vishnumoorthy
Next morning: purification, puja and Purappadu. After the slaying of Hiranyakashipu, devotees receive blessings.
The next morning, after the Pallikkiyara is purified, 5 Kodiyila each of dry rice, Malar and tender coconut are set out as Muthirchcha, as described above. Once the bell is rung and the puja is over, it is time for Vishnumoorthy’s Purappadu.
After Vishnumoorthy emerges and completes the main rites and the slaying of Hiranyakashipu, it is time for devotees to receive blessings. When it is seen that the time has come for the Purappadu of Sree Madayil Chamundi, Vishnumoorthy leaves the arena.

Madayil Chamundi
Purappadu between 11 am and 12 noon. The Manangiyattam and the dance in the Thirumuttam are what set this Chamundi apart.
Sree Madayil Chamundi, the most important of our deities of worship, makes her Purappadu between 11 am and 12 noon. After the Thirumudi is placed, she sits on the pedestal at the shrine; once the puja is done and the Devi opens her eyes, it is hard to imagine anyone who would not be afraid at the sight of her face.
Afterwards she goes east, bows to the Payyanur Perumal, and then comes back into the Thirumuttam walking with her back turned. This is the famed Manangiyattam. Many say that the Manangiyattam and the dance in the Thirumuttam are what make Vannadil’s Madayil Chamundi special. The Mukhathezhuthu here is said to have its own distinction as well.
After the dances comes the fowl offering (Kozhiyaravu), in the Devi’s Varaha form. This form is truly fearsome. After trampling the fowl, circling the Kalashathara and reciting the Vachal on her own origin, the Devi gives Kanakappodi.

Kanakkara Bhagavathi
Once Madayil Chamundi begins giving prasadam, the fierce Kanakkara Bhagavathi enters the arena.
Only after Madayil Chamundi begins giving prasadam to devotees does the fierce Kanakkara Bhagavathi come to the arena. After her dances comes the exchange of weapons between Madayil Chamundi and Kanakkara Bhagavathi, known as the Dwandayuddham (duel). The meaning of this rite remains unknown.
During the Bhagavathi’s dance, devotees may pour the oil they have brought as vazhipadu and vow onto the Pandam (torch). It should also be noted that this Theyyam is not found anywhere else in the Payyanur–Annur region.

Gulikan
The last Purappadu. This Gulikan is unusual: he dwells in the same Pallikkiyara as the other deities.
Gulikan, known as the Puram Kalan and protector of all, makes his Purappadu last. Our Gulikan Daivam is quite different from Gulikans elsewhere. Elsewhere, every Gulikan Daivam dwells at a special spot outside the Pallikkiyara. Here, Gulikan and the other deities dwell in the same Pallikkiyara on separate pedestals, which is not seen anywhere else.
A Mukhapala (face mask) like our Gulikan’s has not been seen anywhere. It holds all the Navarasas (nine emotions). Skilled sculptors have come here and taken casts in clay and wax to make one like it, but it is known first-hand that none of them succeeded.
By the time Gulikan has visited the nearby houses and returned, all the deities are preparing to leave the arena. After the devotees’ Thulabharam (offering by weight), they leave the arena.

Giving the Kuri
The Theyyam takes blessings of thrown rice from the eldest woman; devotees receive the Kuri only after the Pothuvals and the tharavadu.
An important rite: after the rites before the Pallikkiyara, every Theyyam and Thottam comes before the Padinjatta (western room) of the tharavadu and receives blessings as the eldest woman of the tharavadu throws rice over it.
Likewise, when the Theyyam offers the turmeric Kuri to be placed on the Pallipeedam, if the elder or younger Pothuval of this or another tharavadu is at the Padippura, the Kuri is given to them first. Then it is given at the Padinjatta of the tharavadu. Only after that may the Kuri be given to devotees.

This Mahakali, also known by the epithet Pathalamurthi (Goddess of the Netherworld), is a fierce Bhairavi who pursued Chandan and Munda all the way down to the netherworld (Pathala). Rushing out like a whirlwind from her lair (mada) behind Vannadil Pothuval, who had gone hunting in the Alanthatta forest, the Goddess first enshrined herself as Madayil Chamundi at Alanthatta Madavath. Later, her divine presence was established at Thimiri Gopuram, Karivellur Kottur, and Payyannur Vannadi Meenakkottil. It was from there, with the permission of Ammon Perumal, that she was solemnly taken in procession to numerous sacred groves (kavus).
Madayil Chamundi is also performed (in Theyyam) under various other names, such as Anamadachamundi, Baliccherichamundi, Menacchurchamundi, Karimanal Chamundi, and Mamalachamundi. Among the Theyyam ritual songs (Thottam), the Madayil Chamundi Thottam is particularly captivating and heart-touching.
A detailed description of the Goddess from head to toe (Keshadipada Varnana) can be found in the hymn beginning with:
A legendary warrior associated with the tharavadu who fought for the Chirakkal Kingdom during the 18th century. Although we have not been able to pin down the exact year or the specific battle in which he was martyred, piecing together documented history and oral traditions points toward the 1730s. Later deified as Sreekantan Daivam, he is honored as the first of the five Theyyams performed at the Vannadil Meenakkottil Devasthanam, opening the festival in its sequence.
The story of the Vishnu Moorthy Theyyam is associated with a Thiyya youth who was a cowherd in the village of Koyamburam near Nileshwaram, three centuries ago. Kannan's job was to graze the cattle of the feudal lord known as Kuruwatt Kurup. Kurup's niece fell in love with Kannan, and upon learning of this, Kannan ran away and escaped from the henchmen who rushed to kill him. Having sought refuge in a Thiyya ancestral house called Koilpadi in Mangalore to the north, Kannan was welcomed by its matriarch (grandmother) as if he were her own son. After spending five years as a priest and daily worshipper of Narasimhamurthi, the family deity of the house, Kannan felt a strong desire to see his homeland. Bidding farewell and promising to return soon, the young man stepped out, arrived in Nileshwaram, and went down to bathe in the Kadalikkulam (plantain pond/tank). Upon learning of this, Kuruwatt Kurup rushed there and slit Kannan's throat. Ominous signs were witnessed throughout the land.
Kurup's ancestral home trembled. As a form of expiation, Kurup built a kavu (sacred grove) for Narasimhamurthi (Vishnu Moorthy) at Kottappuram. He conducted the kaliyattam (Theyyam festival), and the Theyyam form of Palanthai Kannan was also performed here. Today, not only the Thiyya community, but people from all communities are devotees of this Theyyam.
While the Kalakkattu Tantri was deeply immersed in his worship and tantric rituals, a child in the house was crying uncontrollably and unbearably. Feeling annoyed and disturbed in his worship, the Tantri uttered aloud, without addressing anyone in particular, to somehow stop the child's crying. Hearing those words, the Goddess worshipped by the Tantri instantly killed the child to end the crying.
Infuriated by the terrible cruelty displayed by the Goddess instead of merely calming the child, the Kalakkattu Tantri threw away the sacred wooden seat (Kaalum Palakayum / parts of the ritual pedestal) housing the divine essence (Chaitanya) to a distant place. That wooden plank landed in the dense forest area (Kaanathattu) within the premises of Edamana Tantri's household in Palayi. Recognizing the divine presence, the Edamana Tantri consecrated the deity's essence in his house and set the old wooden plank adrift in the river.
Floating down the river, the plank brushed against an Arayi Thiyyan who was bathing in the Arayi River. Subsequently, he consecrated the Goddess in the Padinjatta (the sacred western shrine room) of his home. Today, this divine manifestation is worshipped as Kadavathu Bhagavathy in the Arayi region of Kanhangad, and as Kaanakkara Bhagavathy in Cheemeni Alanthatta as well as Payyanur Vannad Meenakkottil.
The origin of Gulikan stems from the cosmic crisis that arose during the legendary clash between Lord Shiva and Yama over the young sage Markandeya. After Shiva struck down Yama to save Markandeya, mortality ceased across the universe, leading to severe overpopulation that disrupted the natural cosmic cycle and weighed heavily upon Mother Earth.
To restore global equilibrium while keeping his promise of immortality to Markandeya, Lord Shiva struck his left big toe against the ground, instantly giving birth to the fierce manifestation known as Gulikan. Bestowing Gulikan with his sacred trident and the rope of karma, Shiva designated him as the new executor of death, time, and cosmic justice to manage life transitions and bring peace back to the universe.
